Fayetteville, North Carolina, the seat of Cumberland County. It is on the Cape Fear River, 50 miles (80 km) south of Raleigh. Textiles and lumber are manufactured in Fayetteville, and the city is a market for tobacco raised in the surrounding area. Fayetteville State University is here. The Market House, once a slave market, now houses a historical museum. Fort Bragg, an Army post, and Pope Air Force Base are both near the city, to the northwest.
Fayetteville was founded in 1739 as Campbelltown by Scottish settlers. It was renamed (for Lafayette) and incorporated in 1783. Fayetteville has the council-manager form of government.
