Freeport, Illinois, the seat of Stephenson County. Freeport is on the Pecatonica River, 28 miles (45 km) west of Rockford. Products include electrical machinery, rubber and plastics, and household fixtures. Freeport was founded in 1835 and was incorporated as a city in 1855. The second Lincoln-Douglas debate was held here on August 27, 1858. Government is by mayor and council.
