Gloucester, Massachusetts, a city in Essex County. It is 26 miles (45 km) northeast of downtown Boston, on the southern coast of Cape Ann. For more than three centuries Gloucester has been a fishing and fish-processing center. In summer, it attracts numerous tourists. The James Babson Cooperage Shop was built in 1658. A statue honors Gloucester fishermen lost at sea. (For color picture, , section titled “Interesting Places.”) The first schooner built in America was launched here in 1714. Gloucester was settled in 1623.
