Hayward, California, a city in Alameda County, 18 miles (29 km) east-southeast of downtown San Francisco. Hayward is a trading center for an agricultural and industrial area. The city has large nurseries and more than 70 factories. Produced here are food products, canning equipment, boats, fabricated steel, and paper products. It is the site of Hayward State University.

The first settler was a Mexican rancher, in 1838. William Hayward opened a general store in the 1850's, and Hayward was incorporated as a city in 1876.
