Holyoke, Massachusetts, a city in Hampden County. Holyoke is on the Connecticut River, eight miles (13 km) north of Springfield. Holyoke Dam, where the river drops about 57 feet (17 m), provides hydroelectric power. The leading industry is the manufacture of paper and paper products. Other products are textiles, metals, machinery, and chemicals. Westover Air Force Base is nearby.
Holyoke was settled about 1745. From 1774 to 1850 it was part of West Springfield. Many industries were established after the dam was built in 1849. Volleyball was invented at the Holyoke Y.M.C.A. by William G. Morgan in 1895.
