Huntsville, Alabama, one of the largest cities in the state and the seat of Madison County. It is near the Tennessee River in northern Alabama. Huntsville is one of the leading aerospace centers in the United States and is sometimes called Rocket City.

Redstone Arsenal, which adjoins the city, is the U.S. Army's rocket and missile research and development center. Also at Redstone is the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, a major NASA facility. A prominent Huntsville attraction is the Alabama Space and Rocket Center, which features a museum and theater. Educational institutions include Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Oakwood College.

Huntsville was settled in 1805 and incorporated in 1811. In 1819 the constitutional convention of the Alabama Territory met here and set up the state government. Huntsville remained small until after World War II, when Redstone Arsenal was established.
