Ithaca, New York, the seat of Tompkins County. It is at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, 175 miles (280 km) northwest of New York City. Overlooking the city and lake is the main campus of Cornell University. Also in Ithaca is Ithaca College. The city has machine shops and textile plants, and lies near dairy farms and vineyards. It is a port on the New York State Barge Canal System. Stewart Park, used in filming many early motion pictures, is on Cayuga Lake beside a bird sanctuary. Nearby are Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, and Robert H. Treman state parks.

Ithaca was settled about 1790 and grew after Ezra Cornell founded Cornell University here in 1865.
