Kingston, New York, the seat of Ulster County, in the southeastern part of the state. The city lies on the Hudson River and is just east of the Catskill summer resort area. The main products of Kingston are farm machinery; knit goods, dresses, and shirts; electronic equipment; and cooling equipment.

Kingston was settled by the Dutch in 1652. At various times it was called Esopus, Wiltwyck, and Swanenburg. Kingston was New York's capital for a period during 1777 when a state legislature, supreme court, and constitutional convention met here. The town was burned by the British in October, 1777.
