Kokomo, Indiana, the seat of Howard County. It is on Wildcat Creek, 50 miles (80 km) north of Indianapolis. The city's economy is based largely on the manufacturing of machinery and automotive parts and accessories.
Kokomo was founded in 1842. Here in 1894, Elwood Haynes and the Apperson brothers constructed one of the first gasoline-driven automobiles in the United States.
