Lafayette, Indiana, the seat of Tippecanoe County. It is on the Wabash River, 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Indianapolis. Lafayette produces metal products, drugs, electrical appliances, and prefabricated homes. Purdue University is in neighboring West Lafayette.
An early French settlement was built near present-day Lafayette in 1720 but was later abandoned. The Battle of Tippecanoe. in which General William Henry Harrison defeated the Indians under Tecumseh in 1811, occurred a short distance north of the city. Lafayette was settled in 1820 and incorporated as a city in 1854. It is governed by a mayor and council.
