Lancaster, Ohio, the seat of Fairfield County, on the Hocking River. It is an industrial city in the south-central part of the state. The Sherman House State Memorial, birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his younger brother, Senator John Sherman, is here. Lancaster was founded in 1800; it was incorporated as a village in 1831 and as a city in 1851.
