Lawrence, Massachusetts, a city in Essex County. It is on the Merrimack River, 25 miles (40 km) north of Boston. Lawrence is primarily a manufacturing city, known mainly for textiles and shoes. In the center of Lawrence is Heritage State Park, which includes a common, restored buildings, and historical exhibits.
Lawrence was founded in 1845 by a group of Boston businessmen who dammed the river for water power and built the first textile mills. Lawrence was the scene of a major strike of textile workers in 1912.
