Lockport, New York, the seat of Niagara County. It is on the New York State Barge Canal (formerly the Erie Canal), 21 miles (34 km) northeast of Buffalo. Limestone and sandstone are quarried nearby. Automotive equipment, steel, plastics, wallboard, and chemicals are produced here. Lockport was settled about 1816, next to the Erie Canal locks.
