Lubbock, Texas, the seat of Lubbock County. The city is in the western part of the state, south of Amarillo, in an area known locally as the South Plains. The city is a trade and distribution center for an agricultural area producing livestock, cotton, wheat, corn, and grain sorghum. It is one of the largest inland cotton markets in the United States. There are thousands of producing oil wells in the Lubbock area. Principal industries include the processing of cottonseed oil, food products, and livestock feed; meat packing; and the manufacture of electronic equipment. Lubbock is the seat of Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University. Lubbock was founded in 1891.
