Mansfield, Ohio, an industrial city and the seat of Richland County. It lies near coal deposits in northern Ohio, 66 miles (106 km) southwest of downtown Cleveland. Mansfield produces electrical equipment, fabricated metal products, metals, rubber and plastic products, and machinery. A branch of Ohio State University is here. At Kingwood Center, once a private estate, are a civic arts center and botanical gardens.
Mansfield was laid out in 1808 and named after Jared Mansfield, a United States surveyor general. The author Louis Bromfield, who was born here, established Malabar Farm nearby in 1939.
