Marquette, Michigan, the seat of Marquette County. It lies on Lake Superior in the state's upper peninsula, about 360 miles (580 km) northwest of Detroit. Marquette, near rich iron ore deposits, is one of Michigan's main ore-shipping ports. Iron ore pellets, mining machinery, and lumber are among the city's products. Presque Isle Park, on land that juts into Lake Superior, has recreational facilities. Marquette's surrounding area provides fishing, hunting, and skiing. Northern Michigan University is in Marquette.

Marquette was founded in 1849 as a shipping point for iron ore. It was incorporated as a city in 1871.
