Michigan City, Indiana, a city in La Porte County, on the southern shore of Lake Michigan about 40 miles (64 km) east-southeast of downtown Chicago. It is a manufacturing city and a commercial center for a farming area. Beaches and boating facilities have helped make Michigan City a summer recreational center. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park are nearby. Michigan City was incorporated in 1836.
