Midland, Michigan, the seat of Midland County. It is 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Flint. The Chippewa and Tittabawassee rivers join here. Some 700 buildings form the main plant of the Dow Chemical Company, founded in 1897 by Herbert Henry Dow. He began by extracting chemicals from the area's underground brine. Many of Midland's buildings noted for their modern architecture were designed by Dow's son, Aldon Ball Dow. Midland was settled about 1836.
