Missoula, Montana, the seat of Missoula County. It is on the Clark Fork River in the western part of the state, near the Bitterroot Range of the Rockies. Missoula is the marketing center for an area producing lumber, cattle, and other farm products. Leading industries include sawmilling and the manufacture of paper and wood products.

Missoula is the site of the University of Montana and the U.S. Forest Service Smokejumper Center, the training and dispatching headquarters for airborne fire crews. Lolo National Forest is nearby. Missoula was settled in the early 1860's.
