Muskegon, Michigan, the seat of Muskegon County and a port on Lake Michigan. It also borders Muskegon Lake, at the mouth of the Muskegon River. The city lies 34 miles (55 km) west-northwest of Grand Rapids. Muskegon handles much of western Michigan's trade and shipping. Products include machinery, primary metals, and fabricated metals. Muskegon State Park, Hackley Art Gallery, and a county historical museum are here.

Muskegon was settled in 1810. During 1860–90, it was the center of a vast lumbering industry. The city's economy benefited greatly when the St. Lawrence Seaway was opened in 1959.
