Orange, Texas, the seat of Orange County. It is on the Sabine River, 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Houston. Orange is connected with the Gulf of Mexico by the Intracoastal Canal. Products include cement, paper, and chemicals. Orange has steel fabrication and shipbuilding industries, and is a shipping center for the surrounding area that produces lumber, rice, and cattle. It was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a city in 1858. Naval vessels were constructed here during World War II. Orange has the council-manager form of government.
