Palo Alto, California, a city in Santa Clara County. It is on San Francisco Bay 27 miles (43 km) southeast of downtown San Francisco. Palo Alto is an electronics research and manufacturing center, and it adjoins the Stanford University campus.

El Palo Alto (Spanish for “The Tall Stick") is a historic redwood tree standing in the northwestern part of the city; it was supposedly named by Gaspar de Portolá, who explored the region in 1769. A community was founded here in 1889 to serve the university.
