Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the seat of Jefferson County. It is on the Arkansas River, 40 miles (64 km) south-southeast of Little Rock. Pine Bluff is the trade and manufacturing center for an agricultural area. Farm machinery, textiles, chemicals, processed foods, wood and paper products, and building supplies are manufactured. A settlement made here in 1819 was called Mount Marie. It became Pine Bluff in 1832 and was incorporated in 1839. In 1863 part of the city was burned during a Civil War battle. Pine Bluff has the mayor-council form of government.
