Portland, Oregon, the largest city in the state and the seat of Multnomah County. It is on the Willamette River in the northwestern part of Oregon, just south of the Columbia River. The city was named for Portland, Maine, home of one of its founders. It is one of the chief cities in the Pacific Northwest and is one of the West Coast's major centers of commerce and transportation. Portland is known as the "City of Roses" and sponsors a lavish rose festival each June.
The land rises abruptly on the west side of the Willamette and gradually on the east, with residential areas on the slopes and business and industrial areas near the water. Near Portland are many natural attractions, including the Cascade Range, with snowcapped Mount Hood; the Oregon Coast Range; and the Columbia River Gorge.
In its early years, Portland's economy was dominated by the production of lumber and the processing of agricultural goods. Though these industries remain important, the city's economy has diversified. Among the other important industries are printing and publishing, health services, banking, and the manufacture of electronic goods, trucks, aircraft components, and clothing. The city's livestock market is the largest on the West Coast.
Portland has one of the busiest ports on the West Coast, although the city is 110 miles (180 km) by water from the Pacific. (Ocean shipping reaches Portland by way of the Columbia and Willamette rivers.) Several freight railways, Amtrak, and a rail transit system serve the city. Numerous domestic airlines use Portland International Airport, located northeast of the downtown area on the Columbia River. Two Interstate highways serve the city.
The oldest college in the city is Lewis and Clark College, founded in 1867. Other institutions include Portland State University, the University of Portland, and the Oregon Health Sciences University. Cultural organizations and institutions include the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Portland Art Museum, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and the library and museum of the Oregon History Center. Other attractions include the International Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden, an arboretum, and a zoo—all in Washington Park. The Rose Garden Arena is home to the Trail Blazers and the Portland Fire (professional basketball).
