Riverside, California, the seat of Riverside County. The city is on the Santa Ana River, 47 miles (76 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. Riverside is one of the leading citrus-production centers in the United States. It is also an industrial city and a popular tourist resort. On nearby Mount Rubidoux is a cross dedicated to the Spanish missionary Junípero Serra. The Riverside International Raceway is used for automobile racing. Other attractions include the Sherman Indian Museum and the Orange Empire Railway Museum. The city is the seat of a campus of the University of California. Riverside was founded in 1870. The navel orange was introduced here in 1873.
