Salisbury, North Carolina, the seat of Rowan County, about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Charlotte. It is the trade center for an agricultural area and produces textiles, furniture, and processed foods. A national cemetery here contains the graves of some 12,000 Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison at Salisbury during the Civil War. The Rowan Museum houses 18th- and 19th-century furnishings and other items from the county's past. Catawba College and Livingstone College are here. Salisbury was settled in 1753.
