San Bernardino, California, the seat of San Bernardino County. It is 58 miles (93 km) east of Los Angeles. Situated in a fertile valley of the San Bernardino Mountains, it is the trading, processing, and shipping center for an area that produces mainly citrus fruits and vegetables. The city also has a number of manufacturing industries. Nearby are popular mountain resorts. The National Orange Show is held here each year. California State University at San Bernardino is the main institution of higher learning.
Father Francisco Dumetz established an outpost of Mission San Gabriel here in 1810. However, no real settlement was made until 1851, when a group of Mormons arrived from Salt Lake City.
