Santa Barbara, California, the seat of Santa Barbara County. It lies along the Pacific Ocean on the slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains, about 90 miles (145 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Santa Barbara is primarily a residential and resort community, although there is some manufacturing. The Santa Barbara Mission, sometimes called the “Queen of the Missions” because of its architectural beauty, is the city's main attraction. A campus of the University of California and Westmont College are here.

Santa Barbara began with the establishment of a Spanish presidio (military post) in 1782 and the mission four years later. The city was incorporated in 1850.

Santa Barbara has the council-manager form of government.
