Santa Cruz, California, the seat of Santa Cruz County. It lies on Monterey Bay, about 60 miles (96 km) south of San Francisco. Santa Cruz is a residential and resort community, with some light manufacturing. A replica of Mission Santa Cruz stands on the site of the original mission, established in 1791. The University of California at Santa Cruz was opened in 1965. The city has the manager-council form of government. Santa Cruz was founded in the 1840's and incorporated in 1866.
