Santa Monica, California, a city in Los Angeles County. It lies on Santa Monica Bay, about IS miles (24 km) west of downtown Los Angeles. Santa Monica is a residential and resort community and a center of missile and electronics manufacturing.

An outstanding feature of the city is its expanse of sandy beaches, with a municipal pier and a variety of recreational facilities. Palisades Park, which stretches for 1 1/2 miles (2.4 km), overlooks the oceanfront from high bluffs. Santa Monica's Civic Auditorium is the site of various conventions and trade shows. There is also a municipal airport. The city has the council-manager form of government.

Santa Monica was founded in 1875 by Colonel R. S. Baker and John P. Jones.
