Sarasota, Florida, the seat of Sarasota County. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico, some 30 miles (48 km) south of Tampa. Sarasota is primarily a residential and resort community with excellent beaches and marinas. There is some processing of foods, especially vegetables and citrus fruits. Until 1959 Sarasota was the winter headquarters of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Probably the city's greatest attraction is the Ringling Museums, a complex that includes the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the Ringling Museum of the Circus. Nearby Sarasota Jungle Gardens features tropical plants and birds. Sarasota was settled in the mid-1880's.
