Saugus, Massachusetts, a town in Essex County. It is a residential community on the Saugus River, eight miles (13 km) northeast of downtown Boston. America's first successful ironworks was established here in 1646 and is commemorated by Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. The area was settled about 1630. It was originally part of Lynn (which was called Saugus until 1637). It became a separate town in 1815 and took Lynn's original name.
