Skokie, Illinois, a municipality in Cook County, 13 miles (21 km) northwest of downtown Chicago. Skokie is a residential and industrial suburb with such industries as printing and publishing and the manufacturing of drugs, chemicals, and electronic equipment. A settlement was founded here around 1831 and was incorporated as the village of Niles Center in 1888. It remained a small community until after World War II. The name Skokie, an Indian word, was adopted in 1940.
