South San Francisco, California, a city in San Mateo County, on San Francisco Bay. It is about seven miles (11 km) south of downtown San Francisco. The city is primarily an industrial suburb with meat-packing, chemical, and steel plants. Nearby is San Francisco International Airport. The city has the manager-council form of government. G. F. Swift established the Western Meat Packing Plant here in 1897 and laid out the town.
