Staunton, Virginia, a city and the seat of Augusta County, although independent of the county. Staunton lies in the scenic and highly productive Shenandoah Valley of northwestern Virginia. Industries produce textiles, machinery, and metal products. Mary Baldwin College, the Museum of American Frontier Culture, and Woodrow Wilson Birthplace, a national historic landmark, are here. Staunton was settled about 1738. In 1908, it became the first city in the United States to adopt the council-manager form of government.
