Sumter, South Carolina, the seat of Sumter County. It lies near the center of the state, about 40 miles (64 km) east of Columbia. Sumter is an agricultural trade center and has varied manufacturing industries. In Swan Lake Gardens thousands of Japanese irises are the focal point of an annual festival held in late May. Sumter was settled about 1785 and named for General Thomas Sumter.
