Vallejo, California, a city in Solano County. It is a port on San Pablo Bay 21 miles (34 km) north-northeast of San Francisco. Vallejo has a good anchorage and is an important shipping point. Mare Island, west of the city across Napa River, is an important U.S. Navy shipyard. Vallejo was founded in 1850 and was named for General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a Mexican leader. It was the state capital, 1851-54. Vallejo was chartered as a city in 1866.
