Ventura, California, the seat of Ventura County. The legal name is San Buenaventura, but the post office name is Ventura. Ventura is on the Pacific Ocean near the mouth of the Santa Clara River, 40 miles (64 km) west of the Los Angeles city limits. Citrus fruits, truck-garden crops, and lima beans are raised in the vicinity. Oil wells are nearby and the city's leading industry is the processing and shipping of oil.

San Buenaventura Mission was founded by Franciscans here in 1782, and the community was incorporated in 1866. The city has the council-manager form of government.
