Visalia, California, the seat of Tulare County. The city is in the San Joaquin Valley in the south-central part of the state, about 40 miles (64 km) southeast of Fresno. Visalia's economy is based largely on agriculture in the surrounding area and on wholesale and retail trade. Nearby are the Sierra Nevadas and two national parks—Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Visalia was founded in 1852. It has the council-manager form of government.
