Waterloo, Iowa, the seat of Black Hawk County. It is on the Cedar River, 93 miles (150 km) northeast of Des Moines. Waterloo is one of Iowa's leading industrial cities and is the trading and shipping center for one of the richest agricultural and stock-raising areas in the United States.
The city is known especially for the manufacturing of farm machinery and meat products. The National Dairy Cattle Congress, a livestock show and agricultural fair, is held here annually. Waterloo was settled as Prairie Rapids in 1845, given its present name in 1851, and incorporated in 1868. Government is by mayor and council.
