Waukegan Illinois, the seat of Lake County. It is on Lake Michigan, 35 miles (56 km) north of downtown Chicago. Waukegan produces metal products, machinery, chemicals, and building materials. Located between Milwaukee and Chicago, it is a railway and trucking center. Ship lines use its harbor. Great Lakes Naval Training Center is nearby.

Waukegan was settled as Little Fort in 1835, near an old French stockade. It was incorporated as a city in 1859.
