Zanesville, Ohio, the seat of Muskingum County. Since the early 1800's, Zanesville has been a leading producer of pottery. The city stands at the junction of the Muskingum and Licking rivers, 50 miles (80 km) east of Columbus. Much of Zanesville's industry is supported by nearby coalfields, quarries, and deposits of clay. The clay is well suited for ceramics, and Zanesville has one of the nation's largest tile-making factories. Early Zanesville art pottery is a collector's item. The city's other products include steel, glass, and electrical equipment. Zanesville has the council-manager form of government.

Zanesville was founded in 1799 by Jonathan Zane and John McIntire. It was the state capital, 1810–12.
