Lake of the Woods, a lake in Minnesota and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. The lake is approximately 65 miles (105 km) long and from 10 to 65 miles (16 to 105 km) wide. Of its 1,485 square miles (3,846 km2), 446 square miles (1,155 km2) are in the United States. Before the admission of Alaska to the Union, a strip of land on the lake's northwest shore was the northernmost point of the United States.
Lake of the Woods has a highly irregular shoreline and contains some 14,000 islands and islets. Rainy River enters Lake of the Woods at its southern end. From the northern end flows the Winnipeg River. The lake abounds in fish. There are many popular summer resorts on the islands and along the shore.
