Martha's Vineyard, an island 4 miles (6 km) south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has an area of about 100 square miles (259 km2) and forms most of Dukes County. The county seat is Edgartown, founded in 1632 when the English settled the island. Martha's Vineyard was an important whaling base until the early 19th century and is now a popular summer resort.

The permanent population is about 11,000.
