Mount Desert Island, an offshore island of southern Maine, linked by bridge with the mainland. It covers 100 square miles (260 km2) and is a summer resort and yachting center. Acadia National Park occupies much of the island. Cadillac Mountain, at 1,530 feet (466 m) the highest peak on the nation's Atlantic coast, is in the park. Ferries link the town of Bar Harbor with Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Near Bar Harbor is the Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory for biological research.
