Shasta, Mount,a snowcapped dormant volcano in the Cascade Range in northern California. It was named for the Shasta Indians, who once inhabited the area. Mount Shasta is one of California's most impressive mountains, rising some 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above the surrounding land and 14,162 feet (4,317 m) above sea level. On its upper slopes are five glaciers, one about two miles (3 km) long. On Shasta's western flank is Shastina, a younger volcanic peak 12,433 feet (3,790 m) high. Mount Shasta Recreation Area, centering on Mount Shasta, offers mountain climbing, skiing, and camping.
The first white man to view Mount Shasta was Peter S. Ogden, a Canadian fur trader who explored the area in 1827. The peak was first climbed in 1854 by E. D. Pearce.
