Nantucket Island

Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, an island about 25 miles (40 km) off the southeast coast of the mainland. It is 6 miles (10 km) wide at its widest point and about 14 miles (23 km) long. Nantucket and two smaller islands, Muskeget and Tucker-nuck, make up the county of Nantucket. The island is popular as a summer resort and has both air and ship connections with the mainland. Nantucket Island was settled in the middle of the 17th century and became a fishing center. The population of the county in 2000 was 9,520.
