Padre Island
Padre Island, an island in the Gulf of Mexico off the south coast of Texas. Most of it is occupied by Padre Island National Seashore. It stretches southward along the coast from Corpus Christi for 115 miles (185 km), averaging two miles (3 km) in width. Causeways at each end lead across Laguna Madre (part of the Intracoastal Waterway) to Corpus Christi and Port Isabel. Sand dunes cover the island. It has one of the nation's longest uncommercialized shorelines and is a haven for migratory birds. Padre Island National Seashore was authorized in 1962.
