Pikes Peak, a mountain in central Colorado, rising 14,110 feet (4,301 m) above sea level. It is in the Rocky Mountains at the southernmost part of the Front Range, overlooking the Great Plains. The peak is about 10 miles (16 km) west of Colorado Springs. Its summit is reached by a cog railway and by highway. Pikes Peak was discovered in 1806 by Zebulon Pike. It was a major landmark of the Colorado gold rush of 1859 when “Pikes Peak or Bust!” became a popular slogan.
