Florida, Straits of, a passage lying south and southeast of the Florida Keys. It links the Gulf of Mexico on the west with the Atlantic Ocean on the northeast. Cuba lies to the south, about 90 miles (145 km) from Florida, and the Bahama Islands to the east. 50 miles (80 km) from Florida. The Gulf Stream flows out of the Gulf of Mexico through this passage.
